PSA (Calling all cancer survivors! )

Calling all cancer survivors! 

We are creating a public service announcement (PSA) called “A Word About Cancer” and we are looking for people who have had cancer to take part.  The message is simple:  A positive attitude makes all the difference.   When those around them are optimistic, it helps cancer patients succeed in being positive as well.  Patients with a positive attitude fight harder and feel better.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOUR HELP - - if you are a cancer survivor and are available on either June 4^th or 5^th, day or evening, to join us for a short time to take part in a video being shot in Brooklyn please contact Samantha Fontana at samanthalouisefontana@gmail.com.   Or call 917-447-7533.   We will forward you the PSA and if you believe in our message please take part.   You do not need to memorize anything-- it will be simple!

BAREFOOT TONGUES (featuring Resident Playwrights...)

Here's a look at one of our newest Resident Playwrights, MICHAEL REYES!  We are currently working on two new works, a short play titled PARK SLOPE and the full-length TOWER 5.  Park Slope will be seen in our BAREFOOT TONGUES READING SERIES (our bareNaked Reading Series and Cherry Lane Theatre's Tongues Reading Series joint production) taking place on Tuesday, May 8th, 7pm at the Cherry Lane Studio Theatre.

Here's a closer look at Michael:

From Brooklyn. Joined Army at 18. Stationed at Ray Barracks in Freiburg, Germany. Deployed to Kuwait then Iraq first year of the war. Moved back to New York. Was a member of Castillo Theatre’s young playwrights group. Play, Over There/ Over Here, produced in New York and L.A. Press in N.Y. Times, Backstage and American Theatre Magazine.  Currently a member of The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre writing workshop and The Dramatist’s Guild.

Lives in the Bronx and works at a bookstore.

Meet The Playwright...

Here's a look at the playwright of our upcoming Spring production of EAVESDROPPING ON DREAMS at The Cherry Lane Theatre...

RIVKA BEKERMAN-GREENBERG, Ph.D. (Playwright) Dr. Bekerman-Greenberg was born in an Italian refugee camp after the Second World War, and grew up in Tel-Aviv. Both of her parents were survivors. She attributes her love of the theater to her father, who worked as a lighting and sound designer at one of Israel’s leading stage venues. Recently Bekerman-Greenberg produced and directed "I am carrying the Holocaust in my pocket," a documentary focusing on interviews conducted with four granddaughters of survivors. Bekerman-Greenberg is also as a clinical psychologist/psychoanalyst, practicing privately in Manhattan. She received her

doctorate from London University, and is a graduate of the NYU post-doctoral training program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, she currently serves on the faculty of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, and leads frequent workshops and therapy groups concentrating on the treatment of the transmission of trauma between generations. Bekerman-Greenberg lives in Midtown with her husband, Phillip. Eavesdropping on Dreams is her first play.

Our 2011-2012 SEASON comes to a close this Spring with a full production, reading series and late night workshops. EAVESDROPPING ON DREAMS is Rivka Bekerman-Greenberg’s haunting play about three generations of women in one family and their struggles with coming to terms with the aftermath of the Holocaust. Shaina Eberkohn, a 25 year-old medical student, searches for clues about her family’s lost history. Her mother, who is paralyzed by her own demons, adamantly opposes Shaina's obsession. And Shaina’s grandmother, a survivor of the Lodz ghetto and Auschwitz, refuses to help. All three women are caught in a spider’s web comprised of vague memories, distant emotions and nightmarish dreams. As they struggle to make sense of it all, they uncover a harrowing secret that unlocks their mysterious past. Joining Ms. Cohen and Stephanie Roth Haberle in the cast of EAVESDROPPING ON DREAMS will be Aidan Koehler, Mike Shapiro and Christopher Whalen. Now in its 13th season, BAREFOOT THEATRE COMPANY earlier this season collaborated

with Academy Award nominee Jose Rivera, Pulitzer Prize nominee Kristoffer Diaz and Emmy award-winner Mike Reiss during their bareNaked LA Reading Series in

Los Angeles, CA; and presented the STRIPPED FESTIVAL with plays by Joe Pintuaro, Israel Horovitz, Kristoffer Diaz and Randall Colburn at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New

York. Other recent productions Off-Broadway include TEETH OF THE SONS, a stage adaptation of the film DOG DAY AFTERNOON, the 35th anniversary of Israel Horovitz's THE INDIAN WANTS THE BRONX, as well as the 70/70 HOROVITZ PROJECT, a yearlong worldwide festival that feature 70 of Horovitz's plays on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
