Who's Who In Teeth Of The Sons (Production Blog Entry)

Here's a look at our Director for Teeth Of The Sons, Nicole Haran, also our Co-Artistic Director. Nicole directed the production of Lanford Wilson's Home Free! which featured Producing Artistic Director, Francisco Solorzano. Nicole's production, direction, and aesthetic of Lanford Wilson's short play sparked the beginning of Barefoot Theatre Company. Nicole Haran then went on to direct Lyle Kessler's Orphans which solidified the gritty and visceral quality that Barefoot is known for!

Nicole Haran (Director) Co-Artistic Director, Co-Founder of the Barefoot Theatre Company, holds a BA from Boston University and MFA from Brooklyn College. Some favorite plays she has directed include: Orphans by Lyle Kessler, Home Free & The Rimers of Eldritch by Lanford Wilson, Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley, and Indian Wants the Bronx by Israel Horovitz, which was presented last year at The Marvin Kaye Playhouse. Nicole directed the new play, West Ashville by Tim Plaehn presented in February as part Barefoot's LA reading series and looks forward to bringing it to NYC for a full production next season. She also directed Horovitz's Unexpected Tenderness reading at the Cherry Lane Theatre as well asLong Hard Rain by Jason Furlani with John Ventigmila and Sally Wingert, also at the Cherry Lane. She is a proud to be a member of The Actor's Studio Playwright/ Directors Workshop where she is helping to develop new plays every week. She is the writer and director of two short films: Shatzie and Ordinary Brooklyn. Her latest film project, in development with Barefoot Studio Pictures, will take her to Death Valley this summer where she is directing a documentary about world record holder, Christopher Bergland at The Bad Water UltraMarathon. In addition to directing & film making, Nicole has written several adaptation for the stage including Tom Sawyer & Pinnochio, which she also directed. Nicole lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children lovingly referred to by barefoot company members as "the interns".

bareNaked Reading Series LA!

Taking up residency at the Art of Acting Studio in Los Angeles, California, NYC's Barefoot Theatre Company presents the Inaugural West Coast presentation of the bareNaked Reading Series (no sets, no props, just words). The evenings will feature new plays from emerging and established playwrights followed by a Q&A, Live Music and Free Drinks.

Gina Pensiero
a writer and musician who has been known to dabble in lots of other projects, including (but not limited to) DJing, managing the site/label I Am Janet! and booking shows at The Fifty Fifty Space. She writes the award-winning daily music blog One Sweet Song and plays in the indie rock band Palmyra.

She was mostly raised in New Jersey. She now resides in California.
She is always being impressed by her friends and their projects.

Brothers Jonathan and Benjamin Byram create and perform music that has been likened by many who have had the pleasure of listening to their duet textured harmonies and gently ornamented instrumental arrangements to a fresh and stylistically new version of Simon and Garfunkle. Born and raised in Los Angeles by parents whose careers have been in the performance side of the music industry, the brothers were exposed to a large amount of diverse music from an early age, and they learned to love the experience of live performance with a passion that many performers and music fans alike hold fast to today in a time
of ubiquitous recorded media.

Benjamin's unique musical arrangements and style of playing the
ukulele combined with Jonathan's literary and musical education formed the basis for the beginning of their collaboration. Complimenting each other and pushing each other toward new musical horizons that they would have otherwise not explored, Jonathan and Benjamin continue to make time to write, record, and perform as much as possible. Ensemble Members at The Secret Theatre

We are proud to announce that two of our Playwrights, Daniel Graff and Mark von Sternberg have works being presented at The Secret Theatre this month for the 6th Annual Long Island City One Act Festival.

Mark von Sternberg's Lost in Buenos Aires was first seen in our reading series in 2001 then again in 2010's SMASHED. Daniel Graff's Maharaja Palace was first developed during a retreat for Barefoot Studio Pictures and then seen also during SMASHED, a night of short plays in the works at The Sackett in Brooklyn, NY.

Ensemble Member, Jeremy Brena reprises his role in Lost In Buenos Aires as well as Barefoot family member, Andrew McLarty and Mack Exilus . Congratulations to all!

SIX - The Sixth Annual Long Island City One Act Festival is proud to present new work written by predominantly NYC based writers performed by new actors and directed by new directors.

Each year the The Queens Players invite new writers to submit new one acts. Although a predominantly classical acting company like most actors the members of the QP encourage and support the mounting of fresh, new plays every year. The festival takes place over 3 weeks in three stages. The program of plays in the first two weeks are selected by audience votes and the winning plays and casts go on to the final third week climaxing on the closing night with the winning play, playwright and cast being presented with a trophy followed by an after party.

Since 1999, the Barefoot Theatre Company has been a vital part of New York City's theatre scene. Best Foot Forward

This year we plan to bring you a season filled with some of the best theatre New York City has to offer. The 2010- 2011 year will also be monumental for us as we begin searching for a permanent home, and that begins by establishing a solid schedule of events. The year will feature new works from critically acclaimed playwrights and Advisory Board Members, Israel Horovitz and Joe Pintauro. Also featured will be works by playwrights Lucy Boyle (ABC Family’s “HUGE”), Mike Riess (“The Simpsons”), Jose Rivera (“Motorcycle Diaries”) and students from South Side High School in Long Island to name a few. We will continue to workshop future projects and develop our Urban Outreach Program (our Educational Program teaching acting and producing to elementary school children is already in full swing). Expect to see the return of our bareNaked Reading Series (one night only events featuring new, never produced plays, live music, and complimentary cocktails).

Next Steps!

Barefoot has always thrived on the audience/artist connection and our upcoming year will feature two full productions of plays that have come out of this collaboration. Our first annual bareNaked Reading Series featured two plays by our Ensemble Members Chiara Montalto and Joseph Sousa. Montalto’s Emergency Used Candles is a Brooklyn tale about the profound effect a grandfather and his granddaughter have on each other as one’s life is ending while the other’s is just beginning. In Sousa’s Teeth of the Sons, Brothers Jacob and Sam have not seen each other for over a year. When the wandering Sam returns to Brooklyn to find Jake transformed into a devout Orthodox Jew, new and old gripes arise testing familial ties. Premiering at the legendary Cherry Lane Theater, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed by these two gripping stories about family, loyalties, and the choices we face day to day.

Foot Prints

Having been recognized for the quality of our productions, we were nominated for three Innovative Theatre Awards, received the OOBR Award in excellence for Mary Gallagher’s political Drama, De Donde?, and saw a collection of our work published by Samuel French Play Publishers(Israel Horovitz’s A Mother’s Love, Security, and most recently, New Shorts).

In addition to producing over 60 plays, both new and existing works, we've revived monumental ensemble plays such as Lanford Wilson’s Balm in Gilead, Don Peterson’s Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?, and the 35th anniversary production of Israel Horovitz's The Indian Wants the Bronx (later transferred to the Gloucester Stage Company). In 2008, we presented our critically acclaimed, first ever stage adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon for a sold out run at Theatre Row.

Continuing our collaboration with Israel Horovitz, we most recently produced the 70/70 Horovitz project, a year long, worldwide festival celebrating 70 of Horovitz’s plays for his 70th birthday.

Highlights included working with artists such as Austin Pendleton, Annabella Sciorra, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bobby Cannavale, Lynn Cohen, Marcia Jean Kurtz, Sol Frieder, Jo Bonney, John Doman and company member Anna Chlumsky, just to name a few. In addition to working with some of the best professionals from film, television and theatre, our work was featured in West Africa, Australia, Greece, France, Italy, Korea as well as nationwide with our record breaking festival.
