FEATURED ENSEMBLE MEMBER, Joseph Sousa

We are proud to announce our first ever Monthly Featured Ensemble Member, Joseph Sousa!

During the month of March, we will give you a closer look (photos, interviews, and more) at our Ensemble Member, also known as "Joe" who has joined our newly formed, Playwrights in Residence team. Since joining the company in 2009, Joe has been working as a member of the Literary Team, playing a crucial part in the feedback and selection process.

Next month, we will present Sousa's award winning drama, Teeth Of The Sons at the legendary the Cherry Lane Theatre, Off-Broadway. Teeth Of The Sons was first seen at our inaugural bareNaked Reading Series at Bleecker Street Theatre. As we get you more familiar with our Ensemble Member, we'll be sure to give you a Back Stage Pass to the rehearsal process, currently in its second week.

Joseph Sousa Recent Barefoot performances include Israel Horovitz' Unexpected Tenderness (opposite Michael Stuhlbarg), and Barking Sharks. Favorite NY credits include Davis in Red Light Winter, Rev. Hale inThe Crucible, Fedotik in LaMama's Three Sisters, and Soldier in Shakespeare in the Park's Mother Courage. Teeth Of The Sons is Joseph's first play. It received a staged reading at 45 Bleeker as Barefoot's first Barenaked Reading. Teeth went on to be produced in Portland, Oregon by the Retheater Instrument. Joseph was awarded Portland's Drammy Award for both Original Script, and Lead Actor in a Role. Joseph is a proud member of the Barefoot Theatre Company Ensemble Since 2009.

INSPIRATION ON WRITING PLAY

Teeth Of The Sons was inspired by my constant fascination with the delicate balance between the sacred and the profane. Being from a family that contains a mixture of religious scholars and dancing, singing, wine-toasting bards, I've always found that the truth to honest living lies in the grays between the two.

In my final year of undergrad, two of my acting classmates/friends became involved in a new religious life. One, joined a born again church, the other moved to Israel, seemingly over night, and adopted a new orthodox faith, outlook, and decorum (when visiting with one another, we could no longer hug due to our opposite sexes). Myself, a person of faith, who was just discovering the joys of bourbon, beatboxing, and all night revelry in the bars and brownstones of Brooklyn, I was forced to look at my friends who were seemingly moving into a life of dogma as I was moving away from one.

Several years later, my life has once again struck an inexplicable balance, this play meditates on the journey through those times.

PLAY HISTORY

Teeth Of The Sons was initially developed through a Brooklyn College Undergraduate Theater Organization grant. In the spring of 2007, TOTS received its first staged readings at Brooklyn College's New Workshop Theater, and the 78th Street Theatre Lab. Both readings were directed by Vincent Ingrisano.

In 2008 Teeth Of The Sons was selected as the first play to start Barefoot Theatre company's bareNaked Reading Series, directed by Michael LoPorto with Vincent Ingrisano once again. Teeth Of The Sons received its first production in Portland, Oregon in the fall of 2009 where it won Portland's Drammy award for Actor in a Lead Role and Original Script. Barefoot Theatre Company Ensemble Member, Jason Zimbler directed the West Coast production.

MONDAY, MARCH 28th, 2011

SYNOPSIS

The last time Sam saw his brother Jake, they were cruising Brooklyn as one another's ultimate wing man. Years later Sam returns to Brooklyn in need of refuge for him and his pregnant girlfriend, only to find the fun loving Jake has transformed into a studious born-again Jewish scholar. The homecoming incites a clash of brotherhood, divided family loyalties, and a revelation that beyond a love for their aging grandmother, perhaps all they share in common is a past Jake is desperately trying to bury.

Their reunion will bring into question faith's superiority to family. Can a change of identity come without the cost of destruction through dogmatic militancy?

Television and Film Credits: "Covert Affairs," "30 Rock," "Law and Order," "As the World Turns," "All My Children," "Circumstances" (Sundance Institute Film Lab) and "Waiting in Beijing." BFA in Acting from Boston University's School of Theatre and trained in London at LAMDA.

Jamila, a 17-year-old Palestinian girl growing up in a Lebanese refugee camp, is desperate to escape the small and impoverished world she calls home but her greatest source of inspiration, her father, may also prove to be her biggest obstacle. Mona Mansour, a member of The Public's Emerging Writers Group making her major debut with this production, fuses global politics with the intimacy of coming of age in this searing new play.

Producing Artistic Director, Francisco Solorzano

This Coming Monday, March 28, 2011 at 7:30pm (TOMORROW), Producing Artistic Director, Francisco Solorzano directs a staged reading for Fundamental Theater Project's Mass Rhetorics featuring a new play by Jonathan Libman. The FREE event also features Barefoot Theatre Company Ensemble Members, Lorraine Rodriguez, Charles Everett, Therese Plaehn and Kenneth King along with family member, Michael Pierre Louis.
