12th SEASON REVIEW (a look back)...SMASHED/FALL 2010

As we near our announcement of the upcoming 2011-2012 SEASON we're taking a few days to catch you up on the success of our 12th Anniversary.

To back track a little bit: before going into production for our first ever presented solo work directed by Ensemble Member, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Victoria Malvagno at The Cherry Lane Theatre - we were busy with readings, workshops and parties to help celebrate our upcoming 12th Season.

We dove head first into our BAREFOOT BAR THROWDOWN in the Birthplace of Barefoot Theatre Company, BROOKLYN! The fundraiser for our 12th Season took place at The Wicked Monk in Bayridge, Brooklyn with great success.

We were off and running with events and and presentations coming straight off our 70/70 Horovitz Project and CUNY's McCaulay Honor's College at Hunter College (where we conducted workshops on Ensemble Collaboration to over 400 Students followed by a full presentation at the gorgeous Marvin Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College of The Indian Wants The Bronx, What Strong Fences Make and Beirut Rocks which culminated with a Q&A with the playwright of plays presented, Israel Horovitz).

Soon after our end of summer fundraiser we moved quickly to bring you some works in progress with our WORKSHOP presentation, SMASHED. The Workshop Series took place at The Sackett in Parkslope, Brooklyn and featured works by Kristoffer Diaz, Jason Furlani, Kyle Bradstreet, Tim Plaehn, Joe Pintauro, Daniel Graff, Danelle Eliav, Mark von Sternberg and Kristin Wheeler. Many of these works have moved on to the next stage of their process, for example:

Daniel Graff's short play was soon featured in the L.I.C Short Play Festival followed by BTC's first annual bareNaked Reading Series, LA; Mark von Sternberg's piece was also featured in the L.I.C. Short Play Festival and featured Ensemble Member, Jeremy Brena.

Resident playwrights:

Tim Plaehn's short play turned into a full-lengthplay that was then featured in the bareNaked Reading Series, LA followed by a fully staged workshop presentation at The Cherry Lane Theatre for our bareNaked Workshop Series.

Barefoot Family Members collaborations:

continued as we presented full-length plays of Kristoffer Diaz, Jason Furlani, and Kyle Bradstreet in our 2nd Annual bareNaked Reading Series which took place at The Cherry Lane Theatre; Kristin Wheeler's short play was adapted by the playwright into a film and recently wrapped on production. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!

The presentation at The Sackett, owned and operated by Michael and Ann Ragolia provided us with the opportunity to present new and exciting works in an intimate site, specific environment filled with drinks, music, friends and family. It was another successful collaborative process which allowed us to explore theatrical works with a high level of story telling and rich characters. The audiences' feedback was truly incredible and definitely an important tool in our development process for new works. Creating a safe environment for constructive criticism where playwright, director and actors actually hear the audiences response (both during and after the process) is a key element in our growth as an ensemble. It's all about the work and the process it takes to create some of the most exhilarating and thought provoking pieces of theater we have to offer.

The evening was directed by Co-Artistic Director / Co-Founder, Nicole Haran, LAByrinth Theater Company member, Brian Roff, John Hurley, BTC Ensemble Members, Luke Leonard, Francisco Solorzano, and family member, Kristin Wheeler.

The Cast featured: Ensemble Members, Jeremy Brena, Charles Everett, Samantha Fontana, Thomas James Lombardo, Daniel Graff, Francisco Solorzano, Therese Plaehn, Jennie West Mark G. Cisneros with special guests, Lisa Anderson, Ian Kerch, Kristen Wheeler, Andrew McLarty, and Douglas Taurel.

Daniel Graff

Daniel Graff, a writer and actor, joined forces with Barefoot Theatre Company in 2009, performing in Israel Horovitz's What Strong Fences Make, The Hotel Plays and A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley. Barefoot also functions as open ground for Graff to develop his writing; including such plays Maharaja Palace and Black Man's Dilemma.

John Gazzale

Select theatre credits: Leon in Barefoot Theatre Company's workshop and premiere productions of Dog Day Afternoon. He also appeared in Barefoot's production of Balm and Gilead, and as Arthur, in Lobo Theatre's New York premiere of Tennessee Williams's Spring Storm. John has also worked regionally with the Virginia Shakespeare Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre, and Theatre of the First Amendment in Northern Virginia. He holds an MFA from the Actors Studio Drama School. Member Since 2008.

Ensemble Members featured in New Monthly Theatre Event

Dialogue with Three Chords is a new, monthly collaboration between Barefoot ensemble member and playwright Stephen Gracia and founding member/Associate Director Michael LoPorto.

D3C will feature new plays written by Gracia and directed by LoPorto the fourth Thursday of every month at Mr. Dennehy's Irish Pub at 63 Carmine Street, NYC. They will be staged readings with live music, a talk back, poetry readings, and more.

D3C is free with a suggested donation of $3 going to support the actors and musicians.

Opening night is July 28th at 8pm and will feature four short plays:

Fast Food Strategies

Fast Food Strategies was developed with Barefoot Theatre and presented as a reading at The Producers Club and The Theaters at 45 Bleecker. The other three are making their live debuts.

The four plays will feature Barefoot ensemble members Kendra Leigh Landon, Dan Graff, TJ Lombardo, and Susanne Stewart, as well as Sean Meehan, Matthew Ferretti, and Ridley Parson who previously worked with Gracia and LoPorto on the world premiere of NEXT at HERE Arts Center, a production that Martin Denton of NYTHeatre.com called "vivid and sublime", "uncompromising", "cathartic", and "remarkable theatre."

Live music will be provided by Tommy Lombardozzi.

Ensemble Members at GLOUCESTER STAGE CO.

Ensemble Members, Francisco Solorzano and Therese Plaehn are currently in rehearsals for the World Premiere of Richard Vetere's LAST DAY at Gloucester Stage Company.

The premiere is being directed by GSC Artistic Director, Eric Engel and also features Timothy Smith. Gloucester Stage is located in the beautiful Gloucester, MA.

Francisco Solorzano is also one of the founders of Barefoot Theatre Company as well as its current Producing Artistic Director.

Therese Plaehn is also Barefoot's Literary Manager, having most recently put together the 2nd annual bareNaked Reading Series as well as the bareNaked Readings Series in LA...

MISSION STATEMENT
n 1999, Barefoot Theatre Company was founded by a multicultural group of artists determined to produce vital, thought-provoking works, both new and existing. We embrace the importance of the collaborative process, nurture our ensemble commitment, and continue to learn from the younger generations we mentor.

Founded by actors for actors and reminiscent of The Group Theatre's uncompromising raw aesthetic with process and performance, the Barefoot Theatre Company focuses on presenting socially relevant works.

Associate, Family and Ensemble Members are dedicated to all aspects of collaboration from producing, behind the scenes work, designing, playwriting, acting and directing.

With several Ensemble Members residing in Los Angeles, Barefoot Theatre Company has branched out to bring their visceral style of acting, directing and productions to the West Coast.

OBJECTIVES
1) present a FREE Reading Series to the public while giving artists the opportunity to explore new works and develop working relationships.

2) develop new works by fostering emerging and established playwrights.

3) commit to the actor/director collaboration through workshops and presentations of lesser known works and revivals.

4) present at least two full productions a season.

5) expand an Educational Outreach program through-out the NYC school systems and offer free programming to Inner City High School Students.

Ensemble Member, Aidan Koehler performs LIVE MUSIC...

Ensemble Member, Aidan Koehler will be featured playing LIVE MUSIC for our upcoming bareNaked Workshop Series on June 20th at The Cherry Lane Theatre. The presentation of Tim Plaehn's West Asheville directed by Nicole Haran will mark our final event for this season.

Past Barefoot Theatre Company productions include: musician in 'Scrooge and Marley' at the Kraine Theatre and Evvie in 'Second Violin' at Theatre for the New City as well the world-premiere of the ten minute version by the same name at The Boston Theatre Marathon. Aidan has also performed as a violinist in the Barefoot Band. Other recent theatre credits include: Ivan, 'Two Maples' at Urban Stages; Lilly, 'Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lilly?' with Target Margin; staged readings with The Harold Clurman Laboratory Theatre Company as well as productions of 'What Shall I Give My Children?' and 'Our Town' and this coming September Aidan will perform with the Harold Clurman Lab in Israel Horovitz'sLebensraum; With The Vermont Shakespeare Company: Viola, 'Twelfth Night', and Helena, 'Midsummer'; Abigail Williams, 'Salem Justice' with ArtsPower National Touring Co.; Violinist and Narrator, 'Ransom of red Cheif' with East Lynne Thr. Company; Octavia, 'Antony and Cleopatra' at The Looking Glass Theatre; Billitis, 'Arts Nouvaux', with Xoregos Thr. Nicole Haran most recently directed Barefoot Theatre Company's NYC Premiere of Teeth Of The Sons by Joseph Sousa at The Cherry Lane Theatre.

TIM PLAEHN
Most of the writing Tim Plaehn has done over the last ten years has been at the bottom of student essays, but he has still found time to write short fiction and two full-length plays. His short story "Please Read" was featured in Atlanta's Creative Loafing, and Short Story America has recently selected another story, Confirmation," for publication both on its website and in its anthology of short fiction. In his previous life as poet, Tim lived for a time on Inishmore off the coast of Ireland after he was awarded The Aran Islands Poetry Fellowship. Tim graduated from Northeastern University and holds master's degrees from both Harvard's School of Education and Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English. He has been a teacher and coach for fifteen years and lives in Asheville with his wife Helen and their four children, Martha, Patrick, Flannery, and Henry.

STUDIO HISTORY Cherry Lane Studio opened its doors in September, 1998 as a birthing room for new American work. Owner, and Founding Artistic Director of the Cherry Lane Alternative, Angelina Fiordellisi created the 60-seat black-box theater, originally named the “Alternative Space,” with Samuel Anderson Architects. At that time, CLT Studio benefited from the generosity of our community, including theater- operator and producer Carolyn Rossi Copeland, who donated sixty chairs from The Lamb’s Theater basement, as well as producing artist Jack Gindi, who donated our technical booth, sound and lighting boards. The seating was upgraded and made retractable in 2006 with a generous grant provided by New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Prior to its present incarnation, the 1,200-square-foot space housed a restaurant in the 1950s that was built and managed by the Carroad family, who once owned and operated the entire block. The yard behind their building at 44 Commerce Street served as an outdoor eating area for the restaurant during spring and summer, and the Cherry Lane boiler once served all the properties on this stretch of Commerce Street. The Cherry Lane restaurant, which had a floor dotted with gold-plated fleur-de-lis, also served as a late-night gay club in the 60s and 70s. Arnold Warwick, a tenant at 40 Commerce Street since 1950, claims that the Carroad family evicted an old sea captain in order to create a public ante room where our current lobby is located. Kim Hunter’s children, who grew up in the building, tell the story of an excavation next door at 36 Commerce Street in the late 50s that not only revealed an underground river, but also thousands of turtles.The Cherry Lane Studio is a safe haven for the development of new plays. Our programs allow playwrights to hone their work without the pressure of reviews, before sophisticated, thrill-seeking audiences, who want to discover the bold new voices of today. David Adjmi, Courtney Baron, Sheila Callaghan, Julia Cho, Bathsheba Doran, Anton Dudley, Sam Forman, Katori Hall, Eliam Kraiem, Deborah Zoe Laufer, Rogelio Martinez, Christopher Shinn, Beau Willimon and numerous others have all developed new ideas and plays at the CLT Studio. Our studio- theater programming is a critical component of our mission to build a community to support the playwriting process and the future of American drama.
