Stephen Adly Guirgis steps in to direct Unexpected Tenderness...

We are excited to announce acclaimed playwright and director will step in to direct the reading of Unexpected Tenderness this coming Wednesday for our 70/70 Horovitz Project. Previously slated director, Terry Kinney had to bow out due to work in Chicago. We wish him well and many congrats!

Stephen Adly Guirgis is an award winning playwright and the co-artistic director of LAByrinth Theater Company. His new play,The Motherf**ker With the Hat, will premiere in New York in the 2010-2011 season. Some of his other plays include: Jesus Hopped the A Train, Our Lady of 121st Street, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, In Arabia We'd All be Kings, The Little Flower of East Orange, Dominica: the Fat, Ugly Ho, and Den of Thieves.

Annabella Sciorra completes casting for Unexpected Tenderness...



March 31st, 2010 is Israel Horovitz's 71st birthday, and it is also the anniversary of our 70/70 Horovitz project, a celebration of Israel's work with readings, workshops, and full productions of (almost) all of his plays being done all over the world. To mark the occasion, we're throwing a party bigger than last year's!!

The event will include a cocktail hour with open bar, snacks, live music, and photo opportunities on the red carpet followed by a reading of Horovitz's Unexpected Tenderness directed by Terry Kinney (HBO's Oz, co-founder of the Steppenwolf Theater Company) and featuring Annabella Sciorra (Jungle Fever, What Dreams May Come, Law & Order), Michael Stuhlbarg (2009 Golden Globe nominee for A Serious Man, Drama Desk Award winner for The Pillowman), Lynn Cohen (Munich, Sex And The City), Sol Frieder (original NYC cast, "oldest working actor in New York"), and Barefoot Theatre Company members Anna Chlumsky (In The Loop, My Girl), Joseph Sousa (Teeth Of The Sons), andChristopher Whalen (PS I Love You, Sins Of The Mother at GSC), with stage directions read by Ron Cohen. Theater: most recently seen in the lead role of twins Frankie/Philly in the New England Premiere of Israel Horovitz's Sins of the Mother. originated/developed the role of Moretti in the workshop production of Dog Day Afternoon, Dave, Benjy, Todd, and Angry Male Voice in Israel Horovitz's New Shorts (Theatre Row Theatres opposite Lynn Cohen), Barefoot in the Park, Pericles, Crimes Of The Heart, Israel Horovitz's Security (Bleecker Street Theatre) & North Shore Fish (78th Street Theatre Lab) and Joseph Sousa's Teeth of the Sons (Bleecker Street Theatre) among others. Film: PS. I Love You opposite Lisa Kudrow, (Warner Brothers), The Proctor (Endless Films). A physical fitness enthusiast, he completed his third New York City marathon in the fall of 2007. Christopher is currently Company Manager of the Barefoot Theatre Company. Member Since 2004.

Ensemble Member, Joseph Sousa

Joseph is honored to be sharing the stage with fellow Barefoot family and friends for Israel's birthday.  Favorite New York credits includeMother Courage for the Public's Shakespeare in the Park,  Davis in Red Light Winter, Rev. Hale in The Crucible directed by Rose Bonczek,  Fedotik in La Mama's Three Sisters, and Fr. Roger in Silence at the New Workshop Theater.

After a year and over 70 readings and productions of Israel Horovitz's plays all over the world including Australia, West Africa, Italy, France and more - the Barefoot Theatre Company hosts the 1st Anniversary Celebration that began in honor of Israel Horovitz's 70th Birthday. Event will take place on Mr. Horovitz's 71st Birthday. The evening will kickoff with a cocktail hour at 7:00 PM followed by the reading at 8:00 PM.

Ensemble Member, Jeremy Brena

"The Same Deep Water as you." It will make its debut at the Arizona Black Film Festival on March 26, 2010 in Tempe, AZ. It stars Eve Danzeisen and Barefoot Theatre Company member Jeremy Brena with an appearance by Chiara Montalto. Jeremy Brena was last seen in Israel Horovitz's adapation of the Charles Dickens' classic tale, A Christmas Carol: Scrooge & Marley. Jeremy appeared in numerous productions and readings for the 70/70 Horovitz Project as well as workshopping and taking part in the world premiere of Barefoot Theatre Company's most successful production to date: the Stage Adaptation of Dog Day Afternoon at Theatre Row Theatres.

Theater: became a Barefoot Theatre Company member in 2002 with their production of ?De Donde?. Other theater Barefoot credits: Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?, A Festival of Short Plays and Poetry by Israel Horovitz , Metropolitan Operas, the 40th anniversary revival of Lanford Wilson's Balm in Gilead, Israel Horovitz's New Shorts, and the workshop production of Dog Day Afternoon. He was seen at The Boston Theatre Marathon in Horovitz's The Audition Play which was produced by Barefoot in association with the Gloucester Stage Company. Jeremy revisited the role of Sal in Barefoot's world premiere of Dog Day Afternoon at Theatre Row. He holds a B.A. in Theatre from the College of Charleston. Member Since 2002.

John Gazzale

Select theatre credits: Leon in Barefoot Theatre Company's workshop and premiere productions of Dog Day Afternoon. He also appeared in Barefoot's production of Balm and Gilead, and as Arthur, in Lobo Theatre's New York premiere of Tennessee Williams's Spring Storm. John has also worked regionally with the Virginia Shakespeare Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre, and Theatre of the First Amendment in Northern Virginia. Lynn Cohen joins cast of 70/70 Horovitz 1st Anniversary Celebration

Lynn Cohen is an American actress. She is probably best known for playing Magda in the HBO series Sex and the City and the 2008 film of the same name. She has also played Judge Elizabeth Mizener several times on Law & Order, and has appeared in the movies MunichVanya on 42nd StreetSynecdoche, New York, and Eagle Eye. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri.  Lynn Cohen has appeared with the Barefoot Theatre Company with numerous readings, workshops and the world premiere of Israel Horovitz's Nine Shorts at Theatre Row Theatres.  (imdb)

Co. Member Anna Chlumsky joins cast of Unexpected Tenderness

Anna Chlumsky - appeared in Barefoot Theatre Company's 45 Anniversary Revival of Lanford Wilson's ensemble epic Balm In Gilead in the lead role of Darlene. Also appeared in many bareNaked Reading Series with Barefoot Theatre Company. Member since 2008. She will join other special guests and Barefoot ensemble members in the celebration of our 70/70 Horovitz Project's 1st Anniversary.

Chlumsky entered show business at an early age modeling with her mother in an advertising campaign. She is best known for playing Vada Sultenfuss in the 1991 movie My Girl and the 1994 sequel My Girl 2. She was in Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain with Christina Ricci, and screen tested for the part of 'Lex' in Jurassic Park which eventually went to Ariana Richards. Columbia Pictures expressed serious interest in My Girl 3 (also known as Still My Girl) and a script has been in development since 2003, according to series co-star Dan Aykroyd. Aykroyd revealed in media outlets that Columbia was attempting to sign Chlumsky for the role.[1] The project is still in development stages, with no current updates in four years. Chlumsky appeared on the March 8, 2007 episode of 30 Rock called "The Fighting Irish". She played the character "Liz Lemler". She also appeared as "Mary Calvin" in an episode of theNBC drama series Law & Order (Season 17, Episode 12) first airing January 12, 2007. She was also in three episodes of the ABC dramedy Cupid. Chlumsky starred in the Off-Broadway production of Unconditional by Brett C. Leonard at The Public Theater. It was produced by Philip Seymour Hoffman's theater group, LAByrinth Theater Company, which opened on February 2008. She appeared in the BBC Films political satire In The Loop, co-starring with The Sopranos' James Gandolfini.[2] She plays Liza, a State Department assistant in the movie directed byArmando Iannucci.
