VASSALLO AWARDS (Ed Vassallo)

Tixs are NOW ON SALE for our Spring Gala & 2nd annual Vassallo Awards on Monday, June 22nd, 2015 at the American Ballroom Theater.  All proceeds from the event will go towards our ensemble's basic operating costs as a non-profit organization and our 2016 Full Production of a new play.

The VASSALLO AWARDS is dedicated to the memory of Actor/Producer Ed Vasallo, a cherished member of the New York arts community for more than 20 years. A graduate of Union College and Brandeis University’s MFA program, Vassallo was an energetic and vital member of LAByrinth Theater Company, where he produced the TENN99 and NYNY festivals and served as the company appointed member to the Board. 

In addition to his work at LAByrinth, Vassallo was a dedicated volunteer and mentor at The 52nd Street Project.  Vassallo's producing credits include the short film F—K, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (2010), the award winning feature film King Kelly (2012), and the IFC/Sundance Selects film Days and Nights (2014). Vassallo died in February 2014 after a 2 ½ year battle with leukemia. As an artist, mentor, educator, and friend, his passion for theater and his loving and compassionate nature was and will always be a source of inspiration. 

Each year we award a select group of artists from our community with the Vassallo Award for Outstanding Achievement In The Arts, Mentorship and Educational Outreach Program.  This year, we are excited to include the Outstanding Achievement In Playwriting.  The Honorees are individuals committed and dedicated to the arts and the support of our younger generation.  Last year, our Honorees included: Lynn Cohen with the Outstanding Achievement In The Arts award for her work in film, television and theater; Israel Horovitz with the Outstanding Achievement In Mentorship Award and Stella Adler's Outreach Program with the Outstanding Educational Outreach Program Award accepted by founder/artistic director, Tom Oppenheim.

This year we're thrilled to honor Anna Chlumksy (Outstanding Achievement In The Arts), Kamilah Forbes for her work with Hi-ARTS (Educational Outreach Program), Daniel Talbott (Mentorship Award) and 2015 Pulitzer Prize winner for Best Drama, Stephen Adly Guirgis (Outstanding Achievement In Playwriting).
